I rather enjoyed this book, it was the first vampire diaries book I had read and I would rate it a 5/5! I love how it kept on making me want to read and every part i loved. But the only part I was not that thrilled with was the ending, I would have hoped it would have been a better ending...

OK one thing I would like to clear up is this is NOT written by L. J. Smith. If no one believes me check her web site. Anyways even though it is writen by a "ghost writer" it is still amazing. And SPOILER ALERT a certain someone comes back. Thank the Lord I couldn't live without him.

This book was one of the better ones in terms of writing still. I am getting very annoyed at Elena, make up your mind and stop stringing my Salvatore men along.

I enjoyed the first seven "Vampire Diaries" books, particularly the "Return" series, in a guilty pleasure kind of way. "Phantom" really dissapointed me, though. It's the first of the novels (not including the horrible "Stefan's Diary" books) to be written by a ghost writer, and it shows. Neither the author nor the editor bothered to check for inconsistencies (Mrs Flowers was a child in 1943? I think not). Also, there was no real drama. The conflict seemed trivial, contrived as an excuse for everyone to gush about feelings and have a big love-in at the end. Smith was never a great writer (though her stories were entertaining), but compared to whoever wrote this, she's brilliant.

Finally a Vampire Diaries book that reminds me why I started the series. I read some of the later books simply to finish the series not because they were that enjoyable. This book was as enjoyable as some of the first books in the series. I couldn't put it down. Can't wait for Moonsong.
