Quotes
Add a QuoteI spent my life folded between the pages of books. In the absence of human relationships I formed bonds with paper characters. I lived love and loss through stories threaded in history; I experienced adolescence by association. My world is one interwoven web of words, stringing limb to limb, bone to sinew, thoughts and images all together. I am a being comprised of letters, a character created by sentences, a figment of imagination formed through fiction.
" My parents screaming when they'd lock me in my room and tell me I should be grateful. For their food. For their humane treatment of this thing that could not possibly be their child. For the yardstick they used to measure the distance I needed to keep away."

Comment
Add a CommentAmazing writing! Perfect original style matches the characters brilliantly, and set in a scary future which doesn't feel that far off the mark. The plot is original as well, and stays away from the unrealistic explanations without making it confusing. One of the best books I've read in a long, long time.
I liked this book, but I thought that it took awhile to actually get interesting. It starts out with Juliette locked in a cell, which I found to be boring. It got much better when Adam showed up, especially when the love story became a little more clear. I agree with pretty much everything AvsFan said about the ridiculous run on sentences, metaphors, and repetition. The subject matter of the book - dystopian society - was pretty heavy stuff, so I don't recommend this for younger readers. Overall, I'd recommend this for readers who like the subject of dystopian societies, especially after having read The Hunger Games.
It was really interesting. written in a weird style I have to admit. Some stuff actually made no sense. But otherwise it was very enjoyable and original.
I would have given the book 4 stars if not for the author's bizarre and distracting writing style. The characters were awesome and very original. The story was great (albeit very straightforward - I had the plot figured out by page 30 or so). And the setting was well-done. But the writing . . . ugh. Her metaphors make no sense, paragraphs are run-on sentences and she needlessly repeats the same word again again again again (just like that). And the prose reads like it was written by an alien who is totally unfamiliar with how humans speak. Here are a few snippets: "He leans back against the couch. Runs a free hand over his face. Seasons change. Stars explode. Someone is walking on the moon." Huh??? To be clear, they're sitting in an apartment. Here's another: "The sun is revolving around the moon when he responds." Here's another: "My cheeks are a paintbrush dipped in red." I found this stuff so distracting that I had trouble enjoying the otherwise very enjoyable book. I sort of wish a different author had written the prose.
freaking love. as good as the hunger games. cant wait till the movie come out! :P
Amazing! Engrossing! Captivating! These are but a few of the comments I can make about this debut novel from author Tahereh Mafi. A YA novel, that starts in jail in the mind of a mysterious young woman, who considers herself a monster. Like peeling away the layers of an onion the story unravels its tale. Slowly we begin to see the emergence of a woman who is not monstrous at all, but thru being alone, with no hope of comfort from others by either the touch of conversation or physical contact blames herself for matters that really were out of her control. I would also like to compliment the author on the exquisite use of language, the turn of a phrase. Many times I was engrossed in the story and suddenly found myself going "wait a minute..." in response to the author's descriptive language. I was amazed at the craftsmanship shown in not only the storytelling, but also in the way the words and phrases used helped add to the mental images illuminating the story, crafting my involvement and emotional response to both characters and plot. I will be watching eagerly for more from this talented new author You should give her a try. You won't be disappointed!
Excellent! The prose is absolutely stunning; it was hands-down my favorite aspect of the book.
LOOOOOOVED IT!!! I can't wait for the 2nd book!!! :P 100 out of 100
Freaking Amazing!
I thought this was a really good book! I loved the style of writing the author used and I loved the dystopian element of this paranormal romance. Can't wait for the next book.
