Add a CommentThis novel is based on the lives of the author's own great-aunt and great-grandmother, who walked from Mica Creek, WA to New York City in 1896. Along the way, they met plenty of different people, from Native Americans to President McKinley, although the story is really about the development of mother and daughter as they face their challenges together. The author embellished and invented a bit as she needed to fill in the gaps (the two main love interests for the girl are completely fictional), or to make the story flow a little bit better. The historical note at the end reveals a somewhat sadder ending in real life, but on the whole, the story is amazing and inspiring. It's aimed for young adults, but would appeal to seniors who may have had their own older relatives living in these times.
