Summary
Add a Summaryjust finished the book, and haven't decided whether I hated it or loved it. I'm giving it 3 stars because I was hooked, and that counts for something. I read the first chapter on Cassandra Clare's site, and the second chapter at the back of 'City of Glass'. They were easily the best chapters of the book. I didn't enjoy the scenes after that-Clary's dialogue was choppy, very out-of character. She shifted back into the Clary we know and love from the first few books somewhere in the middle of the story. I also disliked the Dr. Jekyll-Mr. Hyde thing Jace has going on, I swear at the end of one chapter he's telling Clary he loves her and at the beginning of the next he's avoiding her. I was looking forward to the Clary-Jace scenes, but 60% of them involved Clary whining about him not returning his calls and Jace repeatedly trying to convince her that he loves her, but can't be near her. Why can't this couple be left alone? I assumed at the end of the last book that they'd uncover some dark secret of their past, why Clary was the 'wrong person' to fall in love with. Maybe they will in one of the next two books but their relationship was mainly Jace and Clary pining after one another from a distance. Oh, and their final scenes in this book were so sickeningly 'been there, done that'. I used to love Jace's character, because his snarkiness and dark sense of humor made for some interesting dialogue. I figured with Valentine dead he wouldn't be whining about how he was a monster, and didn't deserve Clary etc. But of course Clare found a way to incorporate that into this book, too. The ending frustrating me immensely, I won't spoil it but I wish dead characters would stay dead. I like Simon but I'm not sure his character is strong enough to keep a book going. Guess we'll see in the next books. I will still be looking forward to reading them.
This book was a complicated jumble of events with no clear plot. It mostly just follows Simon around as her tries to figure out his life is a vampire. However, Clary is thrown in every once and a while. The problem is that almost every scene with Clary serves no purpose. She angsts, then she makes out with Jace, then she worries he's going to leave her, then she prepares for her mother's wedding....then she angsts about Jace leaving her. Honestly, this book may have been the shortest of the series so far, but it could have been a lot shorter if Clary had been cut out. Also, there are murders of unimportant extras thrown in to the book to create mystery and tension. These murders have no impact on the characters, and are uninteresting to read about. They have to do with a convoluted plot involving dead babies, character who should be dead, and a pretty boring villain who is only there because Cassandra Clare decided she needed a Valentine replacement. ---See my full review here: http://throughthebookvine.blogspot.com/2011/04/city-of-fallen-angels.html
I have waited so long to continue the story of Clary, Jace, Simon et al and I was not disappointed (*spoiler* .. until the last chapter!). Will Clary & Jace ever be able to be happily ever after? Cassandra Clare seems to love to torture her readers, lol. I liked that Jace be-friended Simon, and the intro of new character, Kyle / Jordan. I did go to bed sad because of the ending.. I love the way Cassie writes, but I find her Twitter account really annoying - there are too many spoilers. If she spent less time tweeting and more time writing, maybe it would make me happy (:

Add a Quote"i was not aware you knew it was a crappy band" - Jordan.Kyle
"As long as everyone's wearing their own pants." "I see I have come in on a fascinating moment in the conversation."
"Do you have a lot of other profound thoughts like that? Blood is blood? A toaster is a toaster? A Gelatinous Cube is a Gelatinous Cube?" - Simon
"Jordan slammed the coatrack down on the ground and sighed. "if you were a vampire, this would have been a lot more useful." "yes," said Jace. "or, you know, just someone with a lot of coats."
"We can buy you one of those books they have for little kids 'Timmy Has Two Dads'. Except I don't think they have one called 'Timmy Has Two Dads and One of Them Was Evil'. That part you're just going to have to work through on your own." - Simon
"Oh, good. You're starting to talk about yourself in the third person. That's not a sign of impending megalomania or anything." - Simon to Raphael
"Hey," said Jace. who was sitting on an overturned speaker, looking at his cellphone, "do you want to see a photo of Alec and Magnus in Berlin?" "Not really," said Simon. "Magnus is wearing lederhosen." "And yet, still no."
"You and your name-dropping. 'I knew Michael'. 'I knew Sammael'. 'The angel Gabriel did my hair'. It's like I'm with the Band with biblical figures."
"He looks," Simon had once said to Isabelle, "like he's thinking about something deep and meaningful, but if you ask him what it is, he'll punch you in the face."
It’s fascinating. You know all these words, and they’re all English, but when you string them together into sentences, they just don’t make any sense.

The Mortal Instruments are amazing! Cassandra Clare is a genius. I love her books and I looove Jace!! City of Lost Souls comes out today!!
Definitely not as great as the others. I regret reading it. The series deserved to end at City Of Glass.
And the saga continues. Returning from a seemingly successful trip to Idris, Clary is adjusting to her new life. She is learning the skills of a Shadowhunter, adjusting to her mother's new relationship, and beginning a relationship of her own, with Jace. But Jace seems to be a little less interested in her than she expected, and what's with the dead baby in the news. Meanwhile Simon is also adjusting to his new life as a vampire, and trying to figure out how to tell his family. He is also being followed, but he isn't sure why or by who. There is lots going on here, and the bad guys aren't vanquished yet. Less huge battles in this one, and more personal issues and smaller interactions. A new character is introduced that looks like he may stay around for a while, and others reappear. Once again, plot leaves us hanging and waiting for the next in the series.
I LOOOOOVE the mortal instruments series i find it very good but a few times my interest wandered but still very good
i loved all 4 of these books but i can't wait until the 5th comes out on may 8th 2012 yayayayay
Cassandra Clare is a very, very good writer ... But I must say after the third book in the Mortal Instruments, a part of my interest in this series has waned. I do enjoy the Infernal Devices series by her more that the Mortal Instruments.
I was a little leery when I heard that Cassandra Clare was writing extending her trilogy into an ongoing series, especially after the disappointment that was Clockwork Angel. Imagine how surprised I was with how good this fourth instalment was? The plot is simple, Clary's mom is finally marrying Luke (yeah!). Meanwhile Clary is continuing her Shadowhunter training. Oh, and did we mention she is still hot and heavy with Jace? Jace, who is pulling away from her emotionally. And then there's Simon. Clary's childhood best friend, Simon, is a vampire who can walk in the daylight is dating two women, neither of whom know there is another. His mother has found out he is a vampire, and let's just say it didn't go well. Finally, he has suddenly become a target of attacks. The Mark of Cain on his forehead return these attacks sevenfold on the attacker, so Simon is safe, but it is troubling that someone is trying to hurt or capture him. But perhaps the most troubling thing going on are the bodies of Shadowhunters that have begun appearing around New York. All former supporters of Valentine, they have shown up in the territories of various Downworlder communities. And how is this link to the corpse of a misformed baby that was found at a local hospital, one with the hands of a demon. A good, solid outing. Jace continues to be the melodramatic, emotionally unavailable bad boy, but Simon's story makes up for that exponentially with his human approach to supernatural problems. Fans will LOVE this book.
This book is a high paced, anticipation filled novel that keeps you drawn in through the whole thing. Similarly to what other people have said, the series could've happily finished on City of Glass, but I'm not complaining! Great read.
Regardless of other peoples comments, it was my favorite book in the series. Sad that series is over though, but I wasn't satisfied with the ending.
