Summary
Add a SummaryOlive knows that high school life isn't easy as a virgin, but what she doesn't know is that a little lie can go a long way. The boys in school hear that she'll tell people she's had "relations" with them but for a price, sometimes ice cream for life, sometimes gift cards for Home Depot. But when the rumor starts to hurt people around her included the school councilor, her favorite teacher, and the guy she likes, she has to figure out a way to make everything better, and that is by telling the truth.
High school student Olive Penderghast (Emma Stone) finds herself the victim of her school's "rumor mill" when she lies to her best friend Rhiannon (Alyson Michalka) about a weekend tryst with a fictional college freshman. Word quickly spreads of Olive's promiscuity and, much to her surprise, she welcomes the attention. When she agrees to help out a bullied friend by pretending to sleep with him, her image rapidly degrades to a more lascivious state and her world begins to spin out of control. As she helps more and more of her classmates and her lies continue to escalate, Olive must find a way to save face before the school's religious fanatic Marianne (Amanda Bynes) gets her expelled and she loses a shot at attaining her own happiness.
Quotes
Add a QuoteOlive: "We've had nine classes together since Kindergarten...ten if you count Religion of Other Cultures, which you didn't because you called it science fiction and refused to go."
Principal Gibbons: This is public school. If I can keep the girls off the pole and the boys off the pipe, I get a bonus.
Olive Penderghast: If he's so smart, why is your boyfriend 22 years old and still in high school? Marianne: Because, Olive, it's His choice! Olive Penderghast: Oh, really? His choice? He just *wants* to be repeating his senior year for, like, the fourth time 'cause he can't pass a single test? Marianne: No, silly, [points up] Marianne: His. His, with a capital H. If the Good Lord had wanted Micah to graduate, he would have given him the right answers. Olive Penderghast: [laughs] I'm sorry, but, I mean, really? You gotta be shittin' me, woman.
Rosemary: I had a similar situation when I was your age. I had a horrible reputation. Olive Penderghast: Why? Rosemary: Because I slept with a whole bunch of people. Mostly guys. Olive Penderghast: Mom!
"And this is my story. The right one."

Comment
Add a CommentA lightweight teen flick. The "Scarlet Letter" tie-in is a nice conceit, but is not used in any kind of thoughtful manner. Some humour and a little wit in it. Amusing enough if you aren't expecting anything.
A fantastic film, thanks largely because of Emma Stone. In the hands of a less capable star, the story may have fell flat, but Emma is anything but bland, and so, deserves many kudos for her performance here. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for this film for a reason. The film is essentially a loose adaptation of THE SCARLET LETTER, geared more towards a younger audience than its original, as teens seem to be those who pass judgments more frequently and easily than older counterparts (although that can easily go up for debate, but I digress). For those who argue that this film is like a thirteen-year-old's view of sex and its sensationalism that surround it, that is simply not true. These characters are very much real. I know people who were these exact characters in high school, and even more importantly, I know people who are these exact characters after leaving high school. They're not caricatures, but they are drawn a little broader so that you can catch the drift. But that's okay, as they're likable or at least understandable. The realism is there. The story is written well by people who clearly understand the concept of nuance and dryness. There's subtlelty to some performances; whether the actors chose to place it there or it was lifted directly from Bert Royal's script doesn't matter. Ultimately it was a fun watch that was surprisingly high quality for what expectations of the genre currently are. One final note: Olive's parents (Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson) are a fairly realistic representation of parents of good kids today; they care but don't need to worry too much, and fill the room with love and humour. Outstanding supporting performances from them, as usual!
I LOVE this movie! LOVE. That's a big word right there and it had wicked sense of humor, and emma stone just climbed up my list of favorite actresses :) Funny, cute...and just perfect. This just became one of my favorite movies - right up there with She's The Man. :)
A fun movie - I'd be mortified watching it with my parents - but it is funny! Loved Olive!
I enjoyed this movie which is a teenage-sex-comedy with a new twist and a point to it. There are some great actors including Patricia Clarkson & Stanley Tucci as Olive's parents.
Emma Stone is a razor sharp talent. She IS this whole movie. (...supporting cast was very good...)
Funny, smart and entertaining movie. After reading some of the negative comments I thought I wouldn't like the movie but it's really funny and Emma Stone is a great actress. The whole cast is funny.
This movie was absolutely hilarious, but it's true, even if you are a "whore" being called one about 100 times a day doesn't mean it won't hurt.
if you like crazy sexy love you will enjoy this one. the dialogue is fast past and witty.
Not exactly my kind of movie, but it was surprisingly entertaining. Smart, funny dialogue. The female lead does a great job. Well written and interesting characters. Good story. My favorite scene(s) were a montage of 80's rom coms and then a homage to them at the end. This is definitely a movie that could appeal to anyone and everyone.
