Summary
Add a SummaryClockwork Angel, the prequel to the New York bestselling series The Mortal Instruments is set in gas lit streets of Victorian London. 16 year old Tessa Gray is lured by the Dark Sisters members of The Pandemonium Club a secret Downworld organization of vampires, warlocks and other demons. Tessa manages to escape with the help of Will, a magical being called a Shadowhunter, killing one of the sisters and a servant who is more robot than human. Will, along with his Shadowhunter friends belong to the London Institute are dedicated to ridding the world of demons. She is fascinated and torn between Will and his best friend James and is drawn deeper into the plot that threatens to destroy not only the Shadowhunters but the world as well. Magic is dangerous – but love is the most dangerous. Compulsive reading as Clare has the ability not only to tell a story but to create a very intriguing other world.
When sixteen year old Tessa Gray arrives by steamship in London to meet her brother, she is met instead by two creepy women from a dark, gloomy mansion. Only when they show her a letter handwritten by her brother does she agree to accompany them to their lair. Tessa becomes their prisoner. They teach her to use her unknown powers to shape shift. Unbeknowst to Tessa, she was born with powers to become anyone or anything. This quality, or gift, makes her highly valuable to the mysterious and terrible Magister. The Dark Sisters tell Tessa that they are to deliver her to this evil man, but Tessa is grabbed and spirited away by two young men who tell her they are Shadowhunters, trained warriors with special gifts who fight Downworlders like vampires and warlocks to save humans. Tessa yearns to find her brother and fears for his life. The Shadowhunters agree to help her find him, if she will use her shapeshifting powers to help them infiltrate a vampire clan. Tessa finds herself torn--does she love the dark and brooding Shadowhunter who saved her from the Sisters? Or does she truly hate him?

"Sometimes when I have to do something I don't want to do, I pretend I'm a character in a book. It's easier to know what they would do."
"It is as great a thing to love as it is to be loved. Love is not something that can be wasted."
"Whatever you are physically," he said, "male or female, strong or weak, ill or healthy, all those things matter less than what your heart contains. If you have the soul of a warrior, you are a warrior. Whatever the color, the shape, the design of the shade that conceals it, the flame inside the lamp remains the same. You are that flame."
"She's dead," said Jem. "Are you certain?" Will could not take his eyes off the woman's face. She was pale, but not with a corpse's pallor, and her hands lay folded in her lap, the fingers softly curved, not stiff with the rigor of death. He moved closer to her and placed a hand on her arm. It was rigid and cold beneath his fingers. "Well, she's not responding to my advances," he observed more brightly than he felt, "so she must be dead." "Or she's a woman of good taste and sense." replied Jem

Add a CommentMy heart woud always skip a beat, for when I read this book. I highly recommend that everyone should read Cassandra Clare's "Mortal Instrument series" and the "The Infernal Devices" You guys would love these books to pieces!!!!
Really good Book I <3ed it
it felt like it took me soo long to readit, but i still liked it. i didn't expec myself to like this book much cause it's in the past. but i actually did :) i recommend it :)
Not as good as the sequel, but that's a good thing, right? XD
Characters occasionally feel too flat and the last 80 pages are very predictable, but a good read. A very grabbing story.
An enjoyable read. The universe that Clare created is fascinating and it definitely left me wanting to know more about the kind of characters that inhabit it and what they can do. The characters in the novel were also well done (with the exception of Tess whom I personally found irritating and contradictory) - she often seemed to argue against the patriarchal values prominent in a bygone era (Victorian age) and then acted disappointed or surprised when others contravened them. I just didn't find her very sympathetic; although her supernatural gift was quite interesting. This book was good enough that I will read the follow-up as well.
It's a good story, really. I mean it. There's just one thing. It's set in Victorian London--the cover's got a guy with a top hat, for goodness' sake--but the characters talk like we do today. It's kind of weird imagining the 19th century setting when the people's speech is so...normal. It needed something more catching to the era, i.e., a few more, "Why, I daresay!" or "how vexing!" or some such. But, you know, it doesn't really get the way of the storyline, so you should still read it.
This book is another great one by Cassandra Clare. It's set in the 19th century and some of the older characters in the Mortal Instruments series can be recognised in the book. Unlike other books set in the 19th century, it's not written heavily in 19th century talk, which makes it an easier read. It's a good read, a typical Cassandra Clare love triangle.
Liked beginning. Towards middle lost interest. Not interested in rest of series.
Great book!! My first Cassandra Clare book. I just happened to see it on the new and recently returned books shelf. I loved the dark and grimy late 19th century London setting. Very atmospheric, almost a character in the book like Tessa or Will. I look forward to the rest of this series and to reading the original series too.
