My heart woud always skip a beat, for when I read this book. I highly recommend that everyone should read Cassandra Clare's "Mortal Instrument series" and the "The Infernal Devices" You guys would love these books to pieces!!!!

Really good Book I <3ed it

it felt like it took me soo long to readit, but i still liked it. i didn't expec myself to like this book much cause it's in the past. but i actually did :) i recommend it :)

Not as good as the sequel, but that's a good thing, right? XD

Characters occasionally feel too flat and the last 80 pages are very predictable, but a good read. A very grabbing story.

An enjoyable read. The universe that Clare created is fascinating and it definitely left me wanting to know more about the kind of characters that inhabit it and what they can do. The characters in the novel were also well done (with the exception of Tess whom I personally found irritating and contradictory) - she often seemed to argue against the patriarchal values prominent in a bygone era (Victorian age) and then acted disappointed or surprised when others contravened them. I just didn't find her very sympathetic; although her supernatural gift was quite interesting. This book was good enough that I will read the follow-up as well.

It's a good story, really. I mean it. There's just one thing. It's set in Victorian London--the cover's got a guy with a top hat, for goodness' sake--but the characters talk like we do today. It's kind of weird imagining the 19th century setting when the people's speech is so...normal. It needed something more catching to the era, i.e., a few more, "Why, I daresay!" or "how vexing!" or some such. But, you know, it doesn't really get the way of the storyline, so you should still read it.

This book is another great one by Cassandra Clare. It's set in the 19th century and some of the older characters in the Mortal Instruments series can be recognised in the book. Unlike other books set in the 19th century, it's not written heavily in 19th century talk, which makes it an easier read. It's a good read, a typical Cassandra Clare love triangle.

Liked beginning. Towards middle lost interest. Not interested in rest of series.

Great book!! My first Cassandra Clare book. I just happened to see it on the new and recently returned books shelf. I loved the dark and grimy late 19th century London setting. Very atmospheric, almost a character in the book like Tessa or Will. I look forward to the rest of this series and to reading the original series too.
